I bought my first camera 30 years ago from a friend. She showed me how to load the film, change the aperture and shutter speed, and I was good to go. Unfortunately, she didn't explain how to properly rewind the film. After destroying my first two rolls of film, I decided to take a photography class.
I enrolled at City College in San Francisco and became influenced by Harvey Edwards, whose work became popular at the time. I had seen some of his images in an issue of American Photographer of Dancers; he also had an exhibit of his work at a gallery in San Francisco that summer, plus I'd seen his work at poster shops. I couldn't afford to buy any of his photographs and I told the friend who sold me the camera about this. She said, "Why don't you make your own dance photographs?" A year later, I walked into a dance studio and asked if I could take photos during class. They said 'yes' and I've been photographing dancers ever since.
Photographing dancers is my main passion although my portfolio has grown to encompass my interests in style, performance, and action photography.
